Starting Your Own Scrabble Club

1.  The goal is to find a “Core Four”.  Four is really the minimum number of players that you need to have a Scrabble club.  Reach out on various forums looking for people who are interested, and who will commit to coming on a semi-regular basis.  Make club create a collaborative effort.  You know you’ve succeeded when you’ve got at least four players meeting up regularly.

2.  Find a venue.  Venues can be anything: a private home, a side area at a restaurant, a job site after hours, a shopping mall, a covered area at a park, or just about any place that is accessible and conducive to a game of Scrabble.

3. Make promotional material.  Forum posts, flyers, business cards, newsletters, pictures, websites, crafts, and other items can help spread the word.  Look for anywhere that has mentioned Scrabble before, or anywhere that you can get traffic.

4. Network.  Find similar groups in your area, whether it’s similar word games (such as the crossword community or board games community) and make friends within your local area.  Many times you’ll find a friend of a friend who could be interested.

5. Create events such as parties, streaming events, trips, etc. People might not be so excited to meet at someone’s house, but they might be more excited to meet up at an exciting, public place, especially outdoors (weather permitting)

6. Create or access materials for new players.  Print out scoresheets, cheat sheets, strategic tips, secure boards, clocks and an electronic source to check word validity.  Offer to play new players and “show them the ropes”, teaching them basic tips and strategies to help them improve.
